Alvord Lake Bridge

Built in 1889 in Golden Gate Park, the Alvord Lake Bridge is the first reinforced concrete bridge in America — a single 20-foot arch, 64 feet wide, designed and built by Ernest L. Ransome using the twisted-iron rebar system he had patented five years earlier. He formed its concrete to look like stone and hung decorative concrete stalactites beneath the arch to give it the feel of a cave. It survived the 1906 earthquake in remarkable shape and is still in service today.
