Webinar Description:
Sulfate soils are common in the Western US
but can occur elsewhere and sulfate waters occur in some industrial
processes and sewage treatment plants. Sulfates can damage or prematurely
destroy concrete. Depending on the type and severity of sulfate exposure,
concrete materials and mix proportions must be limited to comply with
building codes such as ACI 318.
The Webinar will address the mechanisms of the various forms of sulfate
attack. Then the methods for determining sulfate exposure classes will be
discussed, followed by w/cm limits and allowable cementitious materials
combinations for the different levels of sulfate exposure.
Presenter Bio:
Doug Hooton is a Professor of Civil
Engineering at the University of Toronto and is a member of numerous ACI
committees including 201 on durability and subcommittee 318A of the Building
Code. He also chairs both the ACI201A and CSA subcommittees on sulfate
resistance, is a member of numerous ASTM subcommittees on cement and
concrete, and chairs C09.48 on Performance of Cement-Admixture Combinations.
His research focuses on the properties and
performance of cementitious materials, as well as on fluid transport
(permeability) properties of concrete, sustainability, durability,
sustainability, service life, and performance testing of concrete. Together
with K. Hover and J. Bickley, he co-authored recent reports on Developing
Performance Specifications for the RMC Foundation.
