The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has named NRMCA Senior Vice President, Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar, PE, FSFPE, its president-elect. Rashid-Sumar is a fire protection engineer with over two decades of experience in the profession. In her current role at NRMCA, she works with national model building codes and standards organizations, advocating for resilient and sustainable construction, and provides technical support regarding codes, standards and regulations and to legislators at the national, state and local levels.
She has been an active supporter of SFPE throughout her career, including establishing the SFPE United Arab Emirates Chapter, where she previously served as president, as well a member of the SFPE Board of Directors where she served for five years. Ms. Rashid-Sumar will begin her term as president on January 1, 2026.
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) was established in 1950 and is the world’s leading professional society representing those practicing in the field of fire protection and fire safety engineering. The society has over 5,000 members and more than 120 chapters worldwide, including more than 20 student chapters. SFPE serves its members and the profession through quality education, the development of the FPE Handbook, engineering standards and guidelines, research, conferences and publications, and outreach and advocacy efforts. It also plays a critical role in supporting the development of the Professional Engineer (PE) licensing exam in fire protection and the grading of those exams under the auspices of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
